Socialist Equality Party campaigns at Detroit Labor Day parade

On September 2, Jerry White and I campaigned at the Detroit Labor Day parade. Workers expressed great interest in the Socialist Equality Party’s fight for rank-and-file committees in opposition to the pro-corporate trade union apparatus, and for a political movement of workers against the Democrats and Republicans.

Autoworkers in attendance in particular spoke with contempt of UAW president Shawn Fain, who is presiding over mass layoffs at Warren Truck and the ramming through of a concessions contract at Dakkota, where workers rejected a UAW-backed deal four times.

Fain spoke at the end of the rally (after most workers had left), along with AFT President Randi Weingarten. Both these highly paid functionaries called for workers to support the campaign of Harris, trying to cover a right-wing party of war and Wall Street with demagogy.

They lied about the agenda of the Democrats, centered on a massive escalation of war abroad and the war on the working class at home. It is impossible to defend the social and democratic rights of workers without a political struggle against both parties.

Watch the statement Jerry and I made after the rally:
